The SS Sapona was a concrete ship built by the U.S. to transport troops during WWI and was completed after the war ended. It was eventually sold to Bruce Bethell and used as a liquor merchant during the Prohibition Era. In 1926 the ship ran aground during a hurricane and sustained severe damage. The U.S. then used it during WWII for fighter planes as a bombing target. It sits a few miles off of South Bimini in about 15 feet of water. This is a great dive and snorkeling spot to see an abundance of sea life.
There are many things to see and do on such a small island. Below are some of our favorite spots!
Just south of Bimini you will find the site of Honeymoon Harbour Beach, a pristine remote island only accessible by boat. Several charters will take you here to swim with the stingray and nurse sharks. These beautiful creatures have grown accustomed to people touching and feeding them over the years, so the risk of being stung is very unlikely. Check out our link page for more information on booking an excursion.
Golf cart paradise! With North Bimini being 7 miles long, golf carts are the ideal means of transportation and are plentiful. Golf carts typically cost around $40-$100 per day and you can drive them all around the island. Don't forget to drive on the left-hand side of the road!
Fresh seafood is served everywhere on the island. From fried lobster to conch salad, conch fritters, seafood pizza, you name it! We've tried it all and it's all DELICIOUS. Don't forget to pair it with a Bahama Mama or the Bahamian beer Kalik or Sands. My personal favorite is the Kalik Guava or Mango! Check out some of favorites spots on the link page.
You can catch a ferry over to South Bimini Island at the southern tip of North Bimini. The airport is on the south, along with the Fountain of Youth, Bimini Nature Trail, Bimini Biological Field Station, and Bimini Cove. The ferry is $3 per person each way.
